Colin is a Professor in the School of Earth, Atmospheric and Life Sciences at the University of Wollongong. He has a PhD and ScD from the University of Cambridge. Colin has studied the stratigraphy and development of coasts in Australia and New Zealand, as well as on islands in the West Indies and Indian and Pacific Oceans. He has written a comprehensive book on Coasts, form, process and evolution, co-authored a book on The Coast of Australia, and is also co-author of the book “Quaternary Sea-Level Changes: a global perspective”. Colin was a lead author on the coastal chapter in the 2007 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fourth Assessment report. He teaches coastal geomorphology and the application of geospatial techniques to coastal environments.

Margarita is the Co-founder and Director of the Centre for Coastal and Marine Studies (CCMS) in Bulgaria. She has special interests in coastal geomorphology, coastal processes, sand beaches/dunes, coastal erosion/cliff retreat, shoreline changes, MSP and sustainable coastal development. She has a PhD in Oceanology with a thesis: “Beach dynamics and modifications under the impact of port and coast protection structures”. Since 2009 she has been convener of the Geomorphology Session at the EGU General Assembly: “Coastal zone geomorphologic interactions: natural versus human-induced driving factors”. Research Fellow to the Programme for the Study of Developed Shorelines (PSDS), WCU – USA. Author of a chapter for Bulgaria in a book on Coastal Erosion and Protection in Europe – A Comprehensive Overview, co-author in coastal atlas on Sensitivity Mapping and Analysis of the Bulgarian Black Sea Coastal Zone and primary author of a book on Burgas Case Study: Land-Sea Interactions.

Degree Programme in Geographical Information Systems (GIS); and Director of the UAV Centre for Environmental Monitoring and Mapping (UCEMM) at the Department of Geography and Environment, University of Aberdeen, Scotland, United Kingdom. Abdelmounim is a Professor at the Department of Earth Sciences at Abdelmalek Essaâdi University of Tetouan (Morocco). He has a PhD from Abdelmalek Essaâdi University and Nantes University (France). His research activities focus on the characterisation of coastal systems and the impacts of human activities on their processes in the short, medium and long terms. He has participated in many projects that focus on coastal areas with technical approaches (coastal morphodynamics, coastline kinematics, impact of coastal facilities, coastal flooding hazards, sedimentological, geochemical and isotopic studies), as well as coastal planning and management (in this context, in Integrated Coastal Zone Management projects). These works are done mainly in collaboration with Moroccan, French, Spanish and Italian colleagues. He teaches coastal geomorphology, interactions on coastal systems, Integrated Coastal Zone Management and the application of remote sensing to coastal environments.

Marinez has a degree in Biological Sciences (Federal University of Santa Catarina / Brazil) and a PhD in Marine Science at University of Cadiz / Spain. She has been teaching Integrated Coastal Management at Federal University of Santa Catarina, and is the Research Leader of the Integrated Coastal Management Group and Laboratory. Marinez is also visiting professor at the University of Cadiz. She is the executive secretary of the Brazilian Sea Forum and the Technical Director of the Brazilian Agency for Coastal Management. She is also one of the Brazilian Coordinators of the Ibero American Network on Coastal Management (IBERMAR). Her main research interests are on integrated coastal and marine management, ecosystem based management, coastal and marine protected areas, and networks.

Dhritiraj is a physical geographer and an Earth Observation (EO) scientist with 8+ years of experience in coastal Earth Science research and the application of geoinformatics in coastal urban planning and accounting land use changes. His research interest is in understanding the impact of coastal land reclamation and marine sand extraction along with its implication on the broader concept of climate change adaptation and urban resilience in the SE Asian coasts. At CCS, he manages our social media presence for effective coastal science communication.

Paolo is a Full Professor of Coastal Dynamics and Geomorphology in the Department of Physics and Earth Sciences of the University of Ferrara, where he teaches Physical Geography and Geomorphology, Coastal Risk, GIS and Remote Sensing. His current main research interests include coastal processes, the impact of climate change on coastal morphology, the role of extreme storm events in generating coastal risk, river delta and estuarine dynamics, and sedimentation in coastal lagoons. He is on the Editorial Board of Remote Sensing, Frontiers in Marine Sciences, Continental Shelf Research and Coastal Futures. Recently he has published for Wiley two books dealing with coastal storms (Management of the Effects of Coastal Storms: Policy, Scientific and Historical Perspectives; Coastal Storms: Processes and Impacts). Paolo is coordinator of several joint educational programmes on Marine Sciences with the University of Cadiz such as the Earth and Marine Sciences PhD Programme.

Dr. Toru Tamura

Toru is a senior researcher at the Geological Survey of Japan, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science. He has a PhD in Geology from Kyoto University and is also a visiting associate professor at the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, University of Tokyo. His primary research interest is the multi-temporal scale evolution of the coastal landforms in sandy beaches and muddy deltaic systems. He has studied many coastal systems, mainly in Asia and Australia, using a combination of sediment cores, radiocarbon dating, optically-stimulated luminescence dating, remote sensing and ground-penetrating radar for a better understanding of the present and predicting future coast. He also manages an OSL dating laboratory at the Geological Survey to enhance the dating of Pleistocene and Holocene coastal landforms and stratigraphy.

Paul is a Professor in the Department of Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences at the North Carolina State University. He got his PhD from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science by working with John D. Milliman. Paul’s research interests include postglacial sea-level history, river sediment fluxes, and fates of the sea. Over the past 20 years, he has established many international collaborations on land-ocean interactions with colleagues from China, Korea, Myanmar, Taiwan, and Vietnam. Paul has been actively studying the Asian major river-derived sediments to the sea, such as the Yellow, Yangtze, Choushui, Pearl, Red, Mekong, Irrawaddy and Salween rivers. During the Covid pandemic, Paul has organised a weekly world river and delta systems source-to-sink webinar series, with nearly 100 talks archived on the Source-to-Sink YouTube channel.

Prof. Irene Delgado-Fernandez

Prof. Irene Delgado-Fernandez works as a full-time researcher at the University of Cadiz (Spain) since January 2022. Previously, Irene worked as a full-time Professor of Coastal Geomorphology [2018-2022], Reader in Physical Geography [2014-2018], and Lecturer in Physical Geography [2012-2014] at Edge Hill University (NW England) following a NERC Postdoctoral position in coastal aerodynamics at Ulster University (Northern Ireland). Irene gained her Full Professorship from the Spanish National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation in 2020 and has been a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy since 2014.

Irene is a marine and coastal scientist with doctoral training in Canada (PhD by the University of Guelph, Ontario), MSc research in Spain (University of Vigo) and Australia (Sydney University), and BSc degree from Spain (University of Vigo & University of Las Palmas GC (Spain) and (Australia). The exposure to numerous learning and working environments has allowed her to work on a diversity of coastal areas (from cold climates to arid dune fields) and to collaborate with a variety of international research groups.

Irene’s research interests include coastal dune evolution and dynamics, airflow modelling and sediment transport, beach-dune interactions, coastal dune management, and transdisciplinary approaches to science communication. Additional to the IGU Commission on Coastal Systems, Irene is currently a member of ESPL Advisory Board, WICGE, and NEON.

Niki is Professor in the Faculty of Geology and Geoenvironment of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece. She holds a PhD on geomorphology from the Faculty of Geology & Geoenvironment of the University of Athens and a PhD on geoarchaeology from the Faculty of Geoarchaeology of the University of Franche Compte, France.

Niki’s research is related to geomorphology, coastal geomorphology, sea level changes, palaeogeographic reconstructions, geoarchaeology and natural hazards. She has more than 300 publications in scientific conferences and journals and 28 books and educational textbooks. She has given many lectures in Greece, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, USA, Japan among many others. She has received a number of awards and recognitions. Amongst the most significant are two awards from the Academy of Athens. She has organized more than 30 educational seminars and training schools while she has organized 37 conferences and workshops, of national and international interest.
